Question #1

Are we being existentially shortchanged by an economy of fear?

Not if you're counting it.

(It being your change.)

Reporting live from the Homeland, I can say that shortchanging is in full effect.

Aside from the hammer of fear that's routinely swung upside people's heads, the directive to Be Ready/Buy To Be Safe has surely put a hit on people's accounts... and health... which brings about more stress and uncertainty. Thankfully, this can be dealt with a prescription (oh wait, with what insurance?) for some new pills from the doctor, who folks were encouraged to see after watching Dr. Phil and that local news story about how We Can't Keep Up Anymore.

However, while you're huddled in the bathroom with your pills and a glass of water and the latest Newsweek (or Nylon, or No Depression), Donald Rumsfeld uses one his wrestling moves to break down the back door in order to steal one of your children for military duty. Rummy would've been content to make off with the rest of your cash, but then you wouldn't have anything left to buy another flag to stick in the lawn.
